Brand History

Founded in 1744 (the ninth year in Emperor Qianlong’s reign), Wang Bao He was originally a workshop (a winery) in Lintou Village, Dongpu Town, Shaoxing City, owned by Wang Guichen. In the same year, it was settled in Pujiang and Wang Renshan, Wang Guichen’s son established Wang Bao He Wineshop in Xiangua Street, Nanshi District, Shanghai, which was relocated to Pentang Alley (now the intersection between East Nanjing Road and South Shanxi Road) in 1852 (the second year during Emperor Xianfeng’s reign). As one of the earliest wineshops in Shanghai, it was moved to its current location in Fuzhou Road/Central Zhejiang Road in 1936, and gradually grew into a time-honored hotel characterized by both tradition and capability to adapt to times. In October, 1979, it caused a great sensation by launching crab banquet and thus was crowned as “forefather of wine and king of crabs”.

In 1994, Wang Bao He Restaurant made a comeback to Shaoxing and built Wang Bao He Winery, which was later transformed into an entity with joint investments from Huangpu Sugar & Wine Co., Ltd., of Shanghai Tobacco (Group), Wang Bao He Restaurant and the Shaoxing County State-owned Assets Management Bureau in 1998, laying a solid foundation for mass production and quality assurance. In the same year, its wine was awarded “Best-selling Product of Shanghai”, vitalizing it’s the brand.

In 1999, it started to set foot in the industry of star hotel and established the four-star Central Hotel Shanghai. While adhering to the grand history of “Crab Banquet” and carrying forward the advantage of its time-honored brand, it also added new content to the brand, expanding it from a catering-confined industry player into a comprehensive high-end hotel that focuses on providing accommodation and catering services, supplemented by hotel supporting services. A new image of Wang Bao He was created.

In 2009, the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Central Hotel Shanghai, the five-star Grand Central Hotel Shanghai opened to business. By virtue of the recognition and influence of the Wang Bao He brand in the market over the years, the new hotel was highly applauded by guests from home and abroad for its unique design style and professional services. The two spotlight hotels together again brought new interpretation to the brand.

In 2010, the remarkable World Expo created a huge market for hotel industry of Shanghai, and Wang Bao He was given new opportunity as well. In order to strengthen and extend its brand, it set up Pudong Wang Bao He within the Expo site, aiming to display the brand image. The restaurant shouldered not only the major task of providing services for World Expo, but also the mission of passing on the long-lasting culinary culture of crab. It exemplified a new level in terms of scale and management of Wang Bao He.

In 2011, Wang Bao He 1774, a fancy flagship restaurant, was settled in Beijing and grandly opened in March, 2012. In view of the brand advantage, while striving for greater economic and social returns, Wang Bao He also sought for a management mode of high-end catering brand that can be copied and hence made a solid step in promoting the brand to areas outside Shanghai.

At present, Wang Bao He has grown from a village restaurant centuries ago in Shaoxing into a hotel management enterprise of renowned national brand, exploring and moving towards branding, diversification and integration.
